Step 2: Affiliates

Overview Add a Campaign Add an Affiliate Reporting & Testing Customize Account

Affiliate Center Set-Up

Under Publish > Settings you can give your campaigns an outward facing title, a description, any special instructions and a logo if you have one. You can also adjust email settings, place an email suppression file, add/edit terms and conditions for the offer and adjust other settings.

There are two automatic campaign assignment settings that you may want to evaluate. The first setting allows you to have the campaign automatically assigned to every new affiliate when the affiliate application is approved. The second setting allows you to have the campaign automatically assigned to any affiliate that requests the offer from the Affiliate Center. By default, both start unchecked. If you leave both settings unchecked, then affiliates who request a public live offer from the Affiliate Center will have to wait for you to approve them to run the offer. If that’s not fast enough or you don’t want to go through that step for this offer, you may want to check the bottom box, which would automatically assign any offer to the affiliate when they request it, eliminating approval and any consequent waiting.

If this is an offer that you want every affiliate to be able to run, then you may want to leave the bottom box unchecked and just check the top one. For every new affiliate that signs up and you approve in the system, they will automatically have this offer to run without any requests or approvals. If you create a brand new campaign and want every affiliate to have it, check this box for every new affiliate and then make sure to go to the mass action feature. Selecting the mass action feature allows you to assign a campaign to all affiliates who have been in your pool previous to the creation of this campaign.

The Creatives page allows you to view and edit existing creatives, as well as add new ones.  These creatives are advertisements that your affiliates can view and use from the affiliate center.

Adding Affiliates

Now it’s important to get the affiliates created into LinkTrust so that you can get their tracking links as soon as possible. Selecting affiliates from the top menu bar, in the drop-down menu, choose Add > New Affiliate. LinkTrust needs only four pieces of information to create an affiliate: the company name, first name, last name and email address. Applying a password is also helpful. You can also apply certain settings to the affiliate, for instance, the group that you’d like to put the affiliate in, or who the primary manager of that affiliate would be. If you know what kind of traffic that they would run, it’s important to select those as well.

Once you’ve created an affiliate account you can always go back later and add more information, including demographics, notes for an affiliate, or changes to the primary manager. It’s important to note that the primary manager information is what will be shown in the affiliate center using tokens.

Authorizing Affiliates

With your affiliates added, you’ll want to get the affiliates authorized to run an offer. By selecting Campaigns, you can assign new campaigns to the affiliate and see all of the campaigns that the affiliate is already assigned to run. If you want to modify their payout, you can either select the checkbox and modify it or select the edit payout option and edit in further detail.

If the affiliate has a confirmation pixel and they would like you to place it for that offer, you can go all the way to the right side under the Pixel Placed and do so. If they send you a JavaScript one, select the JavaScript radio button and take the URL out of their JavaScript and paste it in. There are a variety of tokens that can be used to pass information on the confirmation pixel. You can use these token to pass data back to the affiliate based on the information that you have in the system or have captured from the advertiser or the initial click.

Send Creatives

Now that we’ve placed the pixels and approved the affiliate to run the offer, we want to make sure we can send the creatives to that affiliate. While logged into the Affiliate Center, the affiliates view and download the creatives for each of their campaigns using the Creatives button on the far right side of the campaign listing.

If you have multiple affiliates and want to send them all information about a new offer you’ve created, you can use the send a message feature located in the Affiliates drop-down menu. With advanced permissions you can also send a message on someone else’s behalf. Select the recipients and then fill the fields for subject line and body (you can use text or html). In addition you can customize the message for your affiliates by using the tokens. Before sending the message, it’s ideal to send a test to a peer first so that you can evaluate the professionalism.

You can also automatically send creatives to an affiliate with the "Send Creatives" link () in the affiliate or campaign settings.

Link Generator

Now that we have the campaigns set up, we can look at a helpful tool called the link generator, which allows you to quickly get tracking links. The link generator is designed to let you easily get tracking links, confirmation pixels or impression pixels. Two items must be selected in order to create a tracking link: the campaign and an affiliate. Once the campaign and the affiliate have been selected, you can identify a creative that you wish to run and, if you wish, you can put a sub ID and other optional information.

Once you click Generate Link(s), three pieces of code appear.

  • Impression pixel: each creative will already have an impression pixel placed, so it is unlikely you will need this in this interface. However, it is available, if needed.

  • Tracking Link: this holds your campaign ID (so LinkTrust can direct traffic to the correct place), and the affiliate’s ID (so LinkTrust can know where the traffic is coming from). This link is extremely important because, without it, LinkTrust doesn’t know which affiliate should be credited with traffic or where to send consumers. Additionally, ad Id or creative IDs can be used to see creative performance.

  • Confirmation pixel: Usually, your confirmation pixel will have already been placed and tested during setup, so this won’t be used often, either.

These links can now be copied out and sent to the affiliate through your email client or through the generate email format, which automatically sends the information to the affiliate listed in the affiliate account. If you don’t want the impression pixel to be sent, modify the email template before pressing send.
